And now introducing this week’s PAWS Pets of the Week… Whiskey and Trixie!  Also remember that all adult pet adoption fees are still $25 off!

Whiskey is a 3 year old large brown tabby. Like most cats, he is shy but very sweet. He likes to snuggle under blankets or close to people. Whiskey is looking for a quiet, low-key home where he will get lots of love. Whiskey is neutered, current on vaccinations, FeLV/FIV negative and micro-chipped. His adoption fee is $100 (only $75 with the discount!).

Hey! My name is Trixie and I’m a 4 month old Coonhound mix! I am a happy, energetic, and incredibly smart little gal! My favorite thing to do is romp and play in the great outdoors. I am looking for a companion who is very active, will take me on long walks, and play with me. Seeing as I am teething, I enjoy chewing on toys, especially ones that go “SQUEAK”!. I will follow my nose, wherever it goes, so I’ll need a securely fenced in yard.  If you are ready to explore the great outdoors with me let’s kick up our heels and get going!  I promise lots of love and kisses!  Lucky for me, I spent a short time in a foster home before making my way to PAWS to find my forever home. I’ve  been spayed, vaccinated, micro-chipped, and de-wormed. My adoption fee is $175.

Come say hit to Whiskey and Trixie at the shelter!  Who knows, maybe one of these sweet babies could be your perfect match!

Welcome back?

An animal shelter is one of the few places where it is not really a good thing to say the words “welcome back.”  PAWS puts a lot of time and effort into their adoptions, but of course, they don’t always work out, sometimes due to the pet, but most the time due to the adopter.  Of course, PAWS recognizes that returns will happen so that is why when you adopt from PAWS, you sign a form saying that if for any reason you cannot keep your pet (EDIT-rehoming is required to be done by PAWS, previously I put that the adopter could rehome themselves) then you must return it to PAWS.  Because of this, these sweet babies will be able to have another chance at finding a home, unlike animals from Animal Control, who are immediately put at risk of being destroyed.

A lot of people already have preconceived notions about shelter pets, so when they are shelter pets who have been returned once or twice, people automatically assume that the pet MUST have something wrong with them, which is definitely not the case.  What many people don’t realize is that adopting a pet is not just buying a new toy for your kids or having something to snuggle with.  Adopting a pet should be seen as adopting a child, adopting something that is going to be a part of your family.  You don’t adopt a child assuming they are going to be the best child in the world.  You would assume that it will take time to add another family member into your home, just like you should assume when adopting a pet.  The bottom line is, you shouldn’t adopt a pet just because you WANT one, but because you are ready to actually HAVE one and take care of one.

Here are some pets who have recently returned to PAWS and are still in need of a forever home. If you want more information on these babies or want to see the rest of the pets available at PAWS, visit their Shelter Adoptions page–

Say hello to Maino and Pumpkin!

Apparently Patty only needed one day in the spot light as pet of the week because she was adopted today!  Ivan (cat) and Evie (dog) were also adopted.  So who else is at the shelter?

Maino, 11 month old Pit Bull mix

Maino is a one year old male Pit Bull terrier. His owners had to move from their home and could not take him where they were going. He is used to living indoors and is housebroken although he does occasionally chew. If you have another dog and are interested in Maino, we advise that you bring them with you to meet him as well since he is used to being the only dog in the household. Maino seems to do ok with some other dogs but is very robust in his play and we need to make sure everyone is compatible before he is adopted. He is also house trained. Maino is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. His adoption fee is $175. As with all of our “bully” breeds, a home visit will be required prior to adoption.

Pumpkin, 6 months old

Pumpkin is a polydactyl orange tabby who has been at our shelter since early October. She is adorable but she often is overlooked because she is very reserved. Pumpkin was fostered during the Holiday and she felt much more comfortable in a home environment. She reacts best to a calm, soothing voice and if you stay on her level (don’t hover above her). She enjoys toys that have bells on them. Pumpkin needs a little TLC at first but she is a very sweet and well-mannered cat. She will do best in a calm and peaceful household. Her adoption fee is $100.

Tomorrow I’ll be going to PAWS and taking video of some of the pets, so keep a look out for tomorrow’s post!

A week that went to the dogs!

Congratulations to the 2o dogs that were adopted last week!  Of course we can’t forget the fact that there were also 9 cat adoptions (including Drift, who had been at PAWS for about 5 months!

Well with that many adoptions, there must not be any animals left to adopt, right? WRONG! There’s still a ton of pets at PAWS that need a home, like Black Mamba and Santa’s Little Helper.

Black Mamba, 3 years old

Black Mamba is a beautiful solid black cat who is searching for her charmer. She is a special needs cat who will need a loving and devoted owner. Black Mamba is heartworm positive. Cats usually have a natural defense against heartworms but sometimes an infected mosquito can bite them and heartworms can develop. Unfortunately, there is no cure for heartworms in cats like there is for dogs. However, there are preventative measures to help keep the problem from getting any worse. Mamba’s adoption includes a six-month supply of heartworm prevention. As we require for all our adoptions, Black Mamba will need a post adoption exam provided by a regular veterinarian, with emphasis on her heartworms. Other than that, Black Mamba can live like any other cat. We don’t want Black Mamba’s condition to prevent her from living a prosperous and happy life. She is a little timid at first but once you charm the Black Mamba she is extremely affectionate and loving.

Santa's Little Helper, Lab mix, 1 years old

Santa’s Little Helper is a one year old lab mix who is very sweet and very energetic. PAWS got her from Animal Control before her time was up over there. “SLH” will need to have a strict indoor-only home because she can climb a fence. She is also full of energy and will need someone who will be willing to run and play with her. Like all animals at PAWS, she has been spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $175.

Interested in either of these ladies? Come visit them at the shelter to learn more about them one on one!

Who are the lucky ones who get extra special attention this week? Santa’s Little Helper and Bella!  Both these ladies have been at PAWS for a while and are in need of an extra special home.

Santa's Little Helper

Santa’s Little Helper is a super sweet and playful one year old lab mix. She came to PAWS from Animal Control in November and is now ready for her new home. She is a happy girl who would enjoy some children to play with. She also enjoys other dogs.  This sweet girl will need a strict indoor-only home because she is quite the sneaky fence climber! She has been spayed, is current on vaccinations, heartworm negative and micro-chipped.  Her adoption fee is $175.

Bella

Bella is a 2-year-old white and black spotted cat who is in DIRE need for a forever home.  This poor girl has been here since the end of July! She is a shy girl and is trying very hard to adjust to shelter life. Bella takes a moment to warm up to strangers but once she does, she is a cuddle bug! Bella cannot show her true colors in a place with so many strangers so we ask that you visit and spend a little time with her or perhaps consider fostering her through the Christmas holiday. Bella is spayed, current on vaccinations, FeLV/FIV negative and micro-chipped. Her adoption fee is $100.

Also another note, both Babs and Barney, two of our previous pets of the week, have been adopted!

First, I wanted to thank everyone who came out to the Happy Howlidays event today!  There was a great turn out and so far there have been 7 adoptions, one including our last weeks pet of the week, Barney!  So who do we have this week?

Lady

DOG OF THE WEEK: LADY

Lady is a three year old Jack Russell Terrier mix who was recently surrendered to us because of economic reasons. She was positive for heartworms but has since been treated. Lady is a good girl with a happy-go-lucky nature; however, she is very stressed here at the shelter with all of the other dogs barking and the people walking by. We are hoping that she can get a home soon so she won’t have to be stressed anymore. Lady gets along with other dogs but will have to take it easy until her heartworm treatment time is finished. She has been spayed, vaccinated, and micro-chipped. Her adoption fee is $250.

Cleopatra

CAT OF THE WEEK: CLEOPATRA

Cleopatra is a beautiful five month old female domestic shorthair cat. She came to the shelter along with her two siblings. Her previous owner found the kittens when they were very young and took care of them as long as she could before having to bring them to the shelter. Cleopatra enjoys playing and snuggling with other cats. Cleopatra enjoyed watching television in her previous home, especially cartoons and shows with a lot of action. She likes looking out the window and is inquisitive. She would enjoy napping in someone’s lap and would love a relatively calm home. Cleopatra is spayed, current on vaccinations, FeLV/FIV negative and micro-chipped. Her adoption fee is $100.
