Some ladies to say hello to…

It can definitely be hard to get going on a gloomy Monday morning, so here are some sweet little ladies at PAWS who you can think about while you’re getting your day started!

Dixie is a 5 year old purebred miniature pinscher. Dixie’s life up until now has not been easy. Dixie came from a breeder/hoarder and seems to have lived most of her life in confinement and having puppies. She is so eager for human affection and can hardly contain her excitement at being shown any kind of attention. She is not used to big, open spaces and kind of crawls along low to the ground very timidly. She is learning leash walking and is eager to please. She is blossoming daily and is a joy to be around. She seems like she will bond very strongly with one person and can occasionally be snappy if someone else tries to bother her while she is being held by someone she likes. With her timid personality, a home without children would be best for Dixie. Dixie has a few areas of thin hair from living in confined conditions and most likely sitting in her own urine. We are eager to find her a loving home where she can forget her past and an owner who will appreciate her charming personality and give her patient, calm care. Dixie is spayed, current on vaccinations, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. Her adoption fee is $250.

Chrissy & Ginger

Chrissy and Ginger are brown tabby sisters that have grown up at the shelter. They are friendly and gentle cats that love to play. They are sad when they are alone so a home together or with other cats will be best. They have already spent a good portion of their kitten hood in a shelter and would very much like them to do the rest of their growing in a loving home.  Their adoption fees are $100 each.

It’s time again for…Pets of the Week!

As you are all aware, usually there are TWO Pets of the Week, one cat, one dog.  There’s only ONE this week because the other one, Big Boy, was adopted today!

So let’s meet the Dog of the Week, Jaylin!  Jaylin is a precious little female Chihuahua (1 year old) looking for a comfy lap to snuggle on. She is very small and only weighs about seven pounds. Jaylin was found by Animal Control wandering around alone and was unable to be reunited with her owner. She is a friendly little girl who seems to like everyone. Jaylin is spayed, current on vaccinations and micro-chipped. She has been treated for heartworms. This little lady has been at PAWS since 1/20 and needs to find a home! Her adoption fee is $250.

This week, PAWS added some wonderful facts to their website! If you haven’t had a chance to check them out, here they are:

“PAWS Humane is a 100% donor funded, no-kill adoption center. Did you know…

131– The number of great animals adopted this January from PAWS Humane!  These pets were united with their now forever homes thanks to our staff, volunteers, and community support. But many many more still need adopting, check out who’s waiting for you today!

0 – The amount of tax money PAWS receives. PAWS Humane is NOT funded by your tax dollars or government grants and relies on private gifts, from people just like you, for the majority of our income.

220+ – The number of local elementary school students impacted in January by a PAWS Humane classroom visit.”

Meet the Pets of the Week!

Let’s give a big hello to the PAWS Pets of the Week, Velvet and Jayden!

I’ve introduced you all to Velvet (previously Black Mamba) before and emphasized how GREAT she is, but since she is the Cat of the Week, I will just have to talk about her again 🙂

Velvet, 3 years old

Velvet is a pretty, three year old black domestic shorthair cat. Velvet has been at our shelter since August and is eager for a real home of her own. When she was fostered during the holidays, she settled into the home very well and  was well behaved. She used the scratching post, litter box and stayed off the counters. Velvet gets along well with other cats and tolerates most dogs. She is reserved and very well mannered. Velvet sometimes plays with toys but she prefers to find a comfortable spot to nap or receive a face and back rub. Velvet is spayed, current on vaccinations, FeLV/FIV negative and micro-chipped. Her adoption fee is $100. If you are looking for a well-mannered cat, Velvet may be your perfect match.

Jayden, Jack Russell/Chihuahua, 2 years old

Jayden is an adorable little scamp and is absolutely full of confidence and personality. He is about two years old and looks to be a Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier mix. He is small, only weighing about nine pounds. He has been treated for heartworms since he has been with us and is ready to go home now. Jayden is neutered, current on vaccinations, and micro-chipped. His adoption fee is $250.

Watch Jayden give a volunteer some lovin’!

Valentine’s Day Dangers

The following article is from the Halo Purely For Pets blog.

Chocolate and flowers are cherished gifts on Valentine’s day. But they can also poison your pets.

The ASPCA’s poison control experts warn that the lillies in your Valentine’s bouquet are toxic to cats. And in the week prior to Valentine’s day last year, there was a 74 percent increase in cases of pets ingesting chocolate, another pet poison.

Dana Fabman, an ASPCA pet poison prevention expert, said in a recent article : “We do see an increase in calls regarding traditional holiday gifts, particularly in the few days leading up to and after Valentine’s day — right when those bouquests and lovely boxes of chocolate arrive.”

Lillies and chocolate are not the only toxic substances, warns the ASPCA, which has created a list of Valentines Day safety tips . And remember, that romantic glass of wine can turn toxic if sipped by your pet, possibly causing vomiting, lack of coordination, even coma.

If you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic substance, contact your veterinarian or the APCC’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435.

Who are the OFFICIAL PAWS Pets of the Week? Hemingway and Cloud!

Hemingway, 2 years old

My name is Hemingway and I am a handsome Maine Coon mix. I am a very sweet and loving cat. I am looking for a home where I can enjoy an indoor and outdoor life. I know the indoors is safest for me but I am used to being partially outdoor and prefer it. I have lived in a few homes and I always stayed nearby. I am “street smart” but I need to go to a place where I have a low risk of encountering a busy highway or dangerous animals. I absolutely love attention and I will sleep in your bed at night. I love cats but I do not like dogs. I am looking for a loving and safe home where I can have another indoor/outdoor companion. I am neutered, current on vaccinations, FeLV/FIV negative and micro-chipped. My adoption fee is $100.

Cloud, 4 years old

Cloud is a VERY sweet Catahoula Leopard dog/Labrador Retriever mix.  He was heartworm positive and has been lucky enough to be taken in by PAWS and treated.  Click here to go to a previous blog post with all his information!

So you thought they’d been adopted?

There’s no doubt that PAWS has been doing an AWESOME amount of adoptions so far in 2011, but I think sometimes we see the adoption numbers and forget that there are still plenty of animals that weren’t adopted.  Today I want to dedicate this blog to all the pets at PAWS who have been waiting for their forever homes for over a month. The number at the end of their name is the date they came onto the adoption floor.

Velvet aka Black Mamba-- longest resident @ PAWS (8/24)

Dalton, German Shepherd mix (1/7)
Jayden, Jack Russell/Chihuahua (1/5)
Choco, Labrador mix (12/23)
Babs, Grey & White Shorthair (12/21)
Penny, Terrier/Chihuahua (12/20)
Katniss, Grey & Orange Shorthair (12/7)
Santa’s Little Helper, Labrador mix (11/16)
Tucker, Grey & White Shorthair (11/16)
Chrissy & Ginger, Brown & Tan Shorthairs (11/2)
Harriet, Terrier mix (10/13)
Pumpkin, Orange Shorthair (10/7)

You can these animals, along with others, on the PAWS Humane adoption page of their website.  Remember, just because some animals have been at PAWS longer than others does NOT mean that there is something wrong with them!
